View Full Version : What's wrong with my Athlon XP 2400+???
OK, I just got the 35W Athlon XP 2400+
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-439&depa=0
I used it to replace an Athlon 1800+, which operated at 1.1GHz according to the "basic information about this computer" under "control panel." When I installed my new Athlon 2400+, the basic info said it was only operating at 600MHz. All settings are the same from when I had the old 1800+ installed. I have an Epox 8RDA3+ Mobo and 1GB of Apacer 2100 RAM. I'm not trying to overclock until I get better RAM, I'd just like to get this chip running normal first. Thanks

Windows does not always report the correct CPU settings, check your BIOS for the true info.
Your previous problem is that your CPU may be running at 100Mhz FSB instead of 133, your new XP2400 should also be running at 133, so check your BIOS for the correct settings.
HTH
I changed the FSB to 133 and now it says 805MHz instead of 600 MHz under "show info," not that the actual value is important but instead that there was an increase. All the other settings are standard, i.e. CPU voltage (1.5V) and FSB speed (133MHz), so it must just be a case of an inaccurate windows report. After un-raring a few GB-sized movies with both chips, there is a noticeable difference in elapsed time.
Thanks for the help.

hbar when you checked the cpu speed in your bios is it the same as in windows?
What does the POST (power on self test) say that your chip is? (the part when your pc first starts up usually tells you what chip your are using i.e. amd 2400+ before it lists off your IDE devices)
Yes, it is the same in the bios. Actually it says that it is running at 133 X 6 = 800MHz. I know it should be 133 X 11 = 1.46GHz with the pc2100 ram I have. The mobile AMD chips allegedly come with the multiplier unlocked, so how do I change it to 133 X 11? Or should I try something else?

if you read section 4.3 of the mobo manual it tells you how to alter the CPU muliplier (clock ratio)

i think it should be changed to 166 in bios.

download the program CPUZ it a good source of info for questions like this, to keep increasing the FSB may have an effect on onther components in the PC, by lifting the CPU Ratio thats all you will affect, just keep an eye on the temps as you raise it, it should be okay, cos at the mo its severly UNDERclocked

here's a screen shot of the CPU on my PC you can see the stepping x18 and the CPU speed 2.4Gig and the over clock 2.7Ghz

Well, I switched the multiplier to 11X, then 12X, then 13X at which point there was a problem and POST reported something to the effect of an unstable CPU overclock, so I changed it to 12.5X and all is well. Now speed is 1.68 GHz according to cpuz and windows reports. Temps are also stable.
To hit the 1.8GHz value I would have to set the multiplier to 13.5X. Something is unstable that will not allow me to do so. There are several other mobo settings like latency and expert operation mode, none of which I'm going to tweak while I'm using this cheap @ss ram. Thanks all for the help.
