i have conected to 2 of the by lan,
What on earth does that mean??

Anyway, how are they connected?

if you are using a single direct cable, it will have to be a Crossover Cable.
Are you using a Hub?

Try to give some more info:)

why do you have more than one lan card? all you really need is one unless your running a server or if one is wireless.

If you want to try the things you need to set on each machine are

-IP addresses (on the PC use the lan card that connects to the Laptop) set these to static ip address one to 192.168.1.1 the other to 192.168.1.2
-Subnet masks make sure they are 255.255.255.0 on both machines
-The workgroup name set them both to the same (doesn't matter what)
-share folders that you want access to

Once this is done you should be able to get on and browse or use the run dialogue box to access your shares and your internet will remain unaffected as it is controlled by the other network card (you will however need to enable Internet Connection sharing to access the internet from the laptop). You may want to consider a router as it is a cleaner and better solution in the long run for sharing an internet connection

m8, all u need to do is have a cross over cable, run the wizard, and choose not to create a floppy, don't need one etc, then just share the internet connection etc

tried that and 0. Tried pinging the ip address (cant remember who told e that) but it says request timed out

What about the dns suffix ip? and the default gateway ip? because they are blank

Ok the fact you are connected directly means that you are probably using dynamic ip allocation specified by your ISP provider- if they support it.

You will first need to disable your firewall for the moment- as that could be the reason you aren't able to ping the ip addresses- I assume you are using one if you are connected directly to the cable modem?

Disable XP's firewall by goint to Network connections->LAN connection-> properties-> Advanced Tab and uncheck the internet connection firewall

Do this on both machines. If using something like zonealarm it should ask you if you want allow the other ip to be allowed- you can do it manually by double clicking on the zonealarm icon in the start bar (bottom right) select the firewall tab on the left, click the zones tab at the top- and then select "add" choose "ip address" and enter the ip address of the other machine-do it on both.

Hopefully you chould be able to ping the machines (assuming you set up the ip addresses like zachariah told you to)

Then run the "set up a home or small office network" from my network places on both machines but on the desktop choose the "this computer connect directly to the net from this computer all computers connect to the net through this", and choose "This computer connects to the net from another computer" on the laptop.

I def almost at the stage of giving up

and on the pc the firewall is not highlighted u cant select anything there

going to try this again.
(i got a new laptop today same prob, might be something to do with the pc)
Is there any programs that will do all this 4 me?

Does there need to be a DNS ip?

I have ran the wizards
Set the ips as said above ( but default gateway is blank?) via the tcp/ip protocol when i right clicked on it
tried ping to each ip with them being timed out?
disabled fire walls
on the pc and laptop it displays its connected at 100.0mbps

Maybe a silly question, but have you enabled the LAN in Network Connections ?

also are you certain you have a crossover cable and not a general patch cable ?

I use a simple crossover cable between 2 XP machines and all I ever do is run the wizards on each to set them up. I've done this with 2 PC's and a PC & Laptop. It really aint rocket science, so it has to be something small that you ar doing wrong.

got an idea.

If i wanted to swap the connection to the broadband modem i would have to phone up blueyonder and change the mac address ( i dunno what it is but had to do it when i changed my pc)
BUT
can i make my laptops mac address the same as the pcs, so i can swap every now nd then so i dont need to buy a router??

No, you can't change the mac address of the laptop to that of the desktop. You will need a router to clone the desktop's mac address.

If you've given up on the Network and just want to use the Broadband connection on the Laptop, you could change the BY modem for a USB modem.
All you need to do then is install the USB drivers on the laptop and hook up the USB cable. I am on BY and have tried this and it works fine, but obviously you can only use one PC at a time.

Depending on which Modem you have, it may already support both NIC & USB ... have a look and see if it has a USB socket as well as the NIC one. Mine is a WebSTAR DPX USB Cable Modem and can be hooked up using a Network or a USB cable.

If you have an old one, try ringing BY and telling them you are having intermittant probs connecting and you are sure the Modem is faulty, as it only happens when the Modem is hot. When they they change it (drop the engineer a beer), insist on a USB one and ask for the CD with the drivers on it, in case you need to reinstall at some time. They prefer to fit these now anyway, because it's less trouble for them.

Dont mention anything about sharing the connection, as they wont be too helpfull .... they will try to sell you another package ;).
