IDE . Jumpers set right. HDD shows up in Bios as Primary Master.
DVDRom Primary Slave
CDRW Secondary Master
DVDRW Secondary Slave

Would also like to know how to shut down when in MSDOS

Ok this may sound stupid, did you remeber to plug in the power connector...I do that sometimes.

ctrl, alt & del to reboot or just hit the power button.

Yes. It's definitely running. Doesn't hitting the power button Naff the hard drive up?

The only way I know to shutdown a pc when in dos mode is hit the power button, ctrl, alt, del in dos just reboots it.

Or you can pour water over it :D

sid, disconnect the other device connected to the primary channel, I had this happen to me to with a seagate. If i dont have a slave it sees it ok...i dont understand why.

Wiil try that m8.
When I get to the setup with Xp it comes up. Did not find any HDDs installed on your computer. Setup cannot continue.

When I booted with a DOS 6.22 disc and ran Fdisk it came up No fixed disks present.

Try a different cable. Or put your old one back in and connect that new one as a slave.

Cable is OK. Works on old drive. At the moment I'm swapping the drives in a caddy.
If I put the old one back in and connect the new one up as slave, what will I be looking for as it will boot up from old one.

Was your old OS XP? If so go into disk management and it should notice it there.

Set Old drive as Primary Master, New drive as Primary slave. Booted up and went very slow, Bios saw it but came up "primary slave hard disc fail" Went into bios and tried to AUTO detect it but no info. Never got to booting with old drive. Removed new drive and booted up as normal.

Ok, as it looks, you have tried the master/slave, different cables and did all the right things. Only other thing it can be is the drive is bad. So hopefully you can exchange it.

Bloke I got it off ( It's a Maxtor ) says I need to download Maxblast to install the drive. Anyone heard of that before? I normally just run XP Pro and it does it all.

Maxblast will install the drive, it is Maxtor's drive installation software, but sure I have installed a fresh hard drive without it before. Give it a go I suppose and see what happens.

Yeah T is right, but what bothers me is it should have installed without it, I have installed 3 maxtors recently and never had to use maxblast. I guess we will see.

I have put two in different boxes without it (120gb & 160gb) .... cant see why yours should need it ..... IMO it's an "iffy" drive.

Down loaded Maxblast and put on Floppy, When I booted Drive shows on first screen but when I go into CMOS I can't get it to detect. Was very hard to detect the first time. Didn't Autodetect then. Changed the setting below a few times and then it came up but not this time. Even when it was showing in CMOS XP couldn't find it. Looks as though it's Iffy.

No .... I haven't heard of anyone, but did see them at around half price and wondered if there was a catch ......... Could have just been a one off bad one.

I'm sure you'll get it exchanged, if the seller is a decent guy.

No catch with the offer Phil. The seller is sending me out a new one. Think he still has a few left. £23 Delivered.
