Hi,

I just installed my new 160GB hard drive and it shows up as having only 127GB in Windows and it also showed that when I was formatting...

I know hard drives are usually a few gig less that what they say on the package, but this is over 30GB missing. I am using NTFS, could this be the reason for that?

Thanks.

try installing windpws xp sp1 or 2, and then repartition the drive again . If that doesn't work make sure your mobo doesn't need a bios update to support drives of that size.

You should use the HDD tools from the HDD maker to prepare the HDD. For example, if yours is a Maxtor, use MaxBlast 3 to format the drive. You then should have about 153GB.

Also, make sure you have SP1 or SP2 installed as stated above.

As long as your mobo supports 48 bit LBA, Van Nugent (http://www.dvdrom-guide.com/forums/member.php?u=18)'s advice should be good

Yep, and even if your mobo's BIOS doesn't, tools like BlastMax 3 will help you break the barrier but you must be running WinXP SP1 or SP2.

Edited: It should be MaxBlast 3, not BlastMax 3 as I said above. Sorry... :)

Its kinda sad, I had to up my Win2000 SP2 to SP4 just to run the new 250GB drives, I were hoping for a small simple patch for 48b support but sadly no :)

Yep, Duffy m8. I also had to up my Win2K to SP4 for the new Maxtor. All my XP systems are fine because I have been running SP1 since the patch just came out.

It should be about 149 GB actually.

Decimal...Binary MB...Windows Output
20 GB...19,073 MB...18.6 GB
40 GB...38,610 MB...37.3 GB
60 GB...57,220 MB...55.8 GB
80 GB...76,293 MB...74.5 GB
120 GB...114,440 MB...111.7 GB
160 GB...152,587 MB...149 GB

You should use the HDD tools from the HDD maker to prepare the HDD. For example, if yours is a Maxtor, use MaxBlast 3 to format the drive. You then should have about 153GB.

Yep, 153GB divided by 1.024 is about 149GB, the way Windows counts, you know... Very mysterious!!! :D

Even more strange .... this is mine and it's 163,913,347,072 bytes - 152gb or 152.5gb :)
