I've heard reports of certain model numbers being less reliable than others. Also, I've heard that some models cannot read dual layer dvd's. I have a console version SCPH-30001. I've had it for about two and a half years and haven't had any problems with it. My question is, what versions are not capable of reading dual layer dvd's? Also, what versions are most likely to have the most problems?

I know of no version that can't read a DL disk. Where did you read that?

i have read reports that some older PS2's have a hard time reading dl disks, but it doesn't apply to all PS2's of that version. so say one v3 won't read it but another will.

Only one way to find out right? DL discs aren't immensely expensive. If I had a DL burner I'd test one out on my v4 and post back but...:)

Well I don't know about DL media, but v1- v4 ps2 lasers are the worst of the lot. Your model number falls into that range so you might have problems with DL media.

Recordable D/L discs are expensive and they are kind of hit and miss at this point (regaurdless of version) with whether or not they work. If your burner supports the booktype/bitsetting options then you will probably have better luck. However, your PS2 can read pressed Dual-Layered discs just fine. Most newer movies are D/L, and games like Champs of Norrath, MGS2, Xenosaga are all D/L. So it's not a question of whether or not D/L discs will work on your PS2, as it is that D/L Recordable media will work on your PS2. Older versions tend to prefer -R format discs over +R so that is the real issue.
