mini dv to vcd ?

hi all
ive got a mini dv video player which i need to clear some tapes for ready for my hols in a weeks time, now ive never tried this before but from what ive read i need a firewire connection and ive sorted that now and i can get the video to play through my comp. but i need just a basic idea of how to get this onto disc, does xp have any standard programms that can do this for me or do i need extra.
if anyone can give me any tips that would be great as it will save me buying more tapes.

There are some free DV capture apps. Then once captured you can convert to VCD compliant MPG's with TMPGEnc, then author/burn with Nero or VCD Easy.

Could also use Adobe Premiere, Vegas, Ulead, Pinnacle, etc. to capture and convert.
