Because you haven't got SP1 installed. However even if you were to install it now, you would need to use something like Partition Magic to increase your main partition.

hard drives are never what they are supossed to be ...because of design/partition etc.....

true, but a 160gb, formatted drive should show as 152gb,not 127gb.

Xp SP1a as stated is your answer

In conjunction with having SP1a installed there most probably is a patch on the HD manu's site too that you should install too.

Sorry to jump in here...

being a bit bold aren't we ;)

never seen any workaround i'm afraid. not sure if partitioning on another system as 2 80gb drives would solve it, ?

Unfortunately not, well, except for Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or 4.
The Service Pack is what enables 48-BIT LBA. The Operating System must support 48-BIT LBA in order to recognize a drive larger that 137 GB.
I think the only workaround is if you partition the drive, making no partition larger than 137 GB.

Yep I had this problem a few weeks ago myself.

Have a look here it may help :

http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=960

I installed SP1 and the "Big Drive Enabler" patch from Maxtor, which edits Windows System registry and then used Partion Magic 8 to extend the partition.

I believe if you try to do it any other way you will suffer data loss in the >128/134gb range.

Also you need to verify that your bios supports 48 bit LBA

scarecrowdr, you can acomplish that by doing this, asuming your bios is not the limitation, but your OS is.

All you need is an ATA133 controller or controller card as they don't have that limitation and you can then install any size drive you want.

Why buy extra hardware when a simple regedit can solve the issue?

Because you still need to meet minimum requirements, as your wonderful link says.

Quote from your link "Warning Data corruption can occur you use this registry value to enable 48-bit LBA support in the original release of Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional..........

Anyway, not everyone is comfortable editing registries, and some people may want a controller card or already have one!

WTF is wrong with you? Maybe not everyone is comfortable opening up their computer and installing hardware! And sorry for underestimating your plentiful bounty of knowledge, you are one of a kind.
