newsgroups help

never used these b4........mostly traded or bought stuff if i needed it.......
but got broadband installed recently and want to start using these....as i think ftp's are a big rip off...and P2P r ok for mp3 but hate being in a long queue etc...........

have checked the faq's and tutorials but l'm still unsure......i have agent as my reader and i'm currently using my isp newsgroup but pretty naff......

what r the best 1's to subscribe to and r the safe ?? do ineed to take any precautions

first off stick to one news server, until you feel you need more (some people have many but personally i use 2, my current vote goes to newshosting or clara if in the uk. only precautions for d'ling is as anywhere. be sensible, use uptodate AV.

for groups well i won't say here but they r listed on this faq
