getting really miffed with this so any help would be greatly appreciated...

got a home network with 3 pc's and a laptop - all pc's running on xp pro and the laptop on xp home all connect through a 5 port ethernet hub using windows own network software..everything works fine when i first set it up but over the course of the day i start to lose them one by one..when i check the connections on each of the pc's that have gone down i find that the ip address which was automatic private address has changed to assigned by dhcp and says invalid ip ad the latop which i use as the gateway bridges it's connection (whatever that means) ..if i go around them all and setup the network again they all work for a while or until one of them is turned off then when restarted it doesnt show on the network..if i use the command prompt i can ping all the pc's using their ip address....is there an easy solution or should i go for a third party software to network with?

thanks in advance

my honest advice would be...

for the cost and ease of use, just buy a router for £35( the USR from ebuyer if you are in the UK) and forget about software options with the hub, they all have their problems. Plus the router has a firewall and built in print server for all the machines.

Where are your machines getting their IPs from? You might want to try using static IPs and assign them to each machine individually.
