Hey people I burned a good 9 games lastnight and none of them work. All the files are on the DVD's and I can read them back to the PC. Is there a way to test my DVD burner to see if it's dying or something? I need asure fire way to test it I don't want to go out and buy one if this one is still working.
Also... I need to know if anyone knows anything about DVD drives.. what should the default positio of the laser be? should it be near the area where the DVD rests and spins? or should it be far away? cause I don't know if it matters I moved it when I was cleaning my lens.
Thanks,

So you tweaked the laser then? Also we need more info. What mod method are you using? (chip, swap, ect.) What DVD-R media are you using?

I didn't tweak the laser, I have a problem with my tray being stuck so I had to open it up and fix it and for the tray not the hit the laser while going back in I have to move it to the back. I cleaned it lightly with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. I'm using Cogswap to load all my games. I'm using Memorex 4X DVD-R's. They seemed to work.
I tried yesterday to copy a game over with one of my other PC's but the damn thing kept giving me errors at like 10% and 54% with DVD Decrypter. I also get the CD spinning extremly fast when I drop in anything besides a DVD. It spins enough that the entire room becomes hot over just the heat thats coming out of the drive which is insane. I tried burning a game that I know was working to a DVD-RW and it worked all the files were there, same TOC and everything. But I couldn't test if it was working cause my PS2 doesn't read DVD-RW's
When burning a CD-R I can't burn at the full 24x speed or the cd will fail. It starts to spin so fast that Nero just gives me a burned proccess error.
If there's a way I can adjust my laser or something to fix the burns I'd really like to know about it.
Thanks,

Adjusting the laser is not a wise move, generally it is just putting off the inevitable for a little bit (replacing your laser). Burning CD-Rs at anything higher than 4x IMHO is not a wise move as CD-Rs are the most stressful on your PS2 laser/motor assembly. If you don't believe me listen to the amount of noise difference between a 24x burned CD-R and a 4x burned CD-R. Also you are using Memorex DVD-R which is definitely not the most recommended brand out there. Memorex (like virtually all other name brand discs) *****s itself out to whatever manufacturer gives them the best deal at the time. So you have no gaurantee of quality. Generally Memorex have their dyes Manufactured by CMC Magnetics (they are okay but definitely not the best), but sometimes they do outsource to other companies. So it is entirely possible that on this latest batch that you ended up getting Memorex DVD-R with a crappy dye manufacturer who made them. My recommendation is to ditch the Memorex discs and go with Ritek DVD-R. You can get 50 packs of the 4x ones for $26 (or less) with free shipping from www.newegg.com right now. Newegg has an outstanding customer service reputation so no worries there. Ritek manufactures their own dyes so you never have to guess who is producing the discs when you purchase them. If you want the absolute best of the best for media quality though, you can get 50 packs of the 4x Taiyo Yudens for $45 + shipping from www.rima.com now (this site is also highly recommended). To put this in perspective for you, both Ritek and Taiyo Yuden have manufactured dyes for the following store labels: TDK, Verbatim (at least on certain lines), Fujifilm. So you are getting the same quality without paying for the brand name label by getting either Ritek or Taiyo Yuden. I have yet to see Memorex as cheap as Ritek, and unless there is a really good sale on the Memorex, the Taiyo Yuden will be a little bit cheaper as well.

Do you have Nero, Alcohol 120%, RNM, ect.? It would be best to burn your PS2 backups with one of those programs. Just do a straight copy (read to HD and then write back to disc) with any one of those programs and it will work fine (for CD-R or DVD-R).

Yea I use Nero, Alcohol, and DVD Decrypter. I don't like Nero anymore I like their older versions but they don't support DVD's. DVD Decrypter has worked great so far but then again it's all I ever used to burn DVD based games and they've all worked.
But thanks guys I appreciate the help,

Have you checked the jumpers on your burner? Also what DVD drive are you reading your games with?

I checked the jumpers it's set to slave and it's hooked up as a slave. Also the DVD reader I'm using is like a Samsung drive that was OEM with my PC I don't know what model it is.

Have you tried cleaning your drive? (ie using canned air, or a non-abrasive cloth to wipe down the laser).

I used air then I was told to clean it with some rubbing alcohol which now is reading disks a lot better but still haven't tried burning since can't waste DVD's I got a DVD-RW but i can't use it to see if the burn turned out ok.

Mite surprise some; but XP has a function to check disks for dust too. You put the disk in your PC & open the cdrom drive property box & there is a selection for checking dust on disks. I found it when I clicked my MY COMPUTER on the desktop & then the drives from there.
