Has anyone had any experience with DIRECWAY or a similar satellite internet provider? My local ISP recently attempted to set up broadband access for my area but there was not enough interest, so I'm stuck with dial-up indefinitely. Would I be able to play games with satellite internet (DIRECWAY) or would I have extremely high ping times that would make the game unplayable? It's quite an expensive investment, so I don't want to spend all the money unless it's a fast connection where I'm able to effectively play online games. Any info or advice would be appreciated.

from the Uk so no idea about the service you mention specifically but..
in general make sure it is two way satellite and not using dialup for the uplink part.
to be honest though even two way has a lot of lag and can be a nightmare for gaming.

It's 2-way satellite, 500k down / 50k up, but I'm still afraid that ping times may be extremely high. As it is right now I get decent ping times with my dial-up (150-200ms), but my low bandwidth (26.4k) is killing me.

50k up? as in the same type of k that you are saying is 26.4k for dialup?
if so, then forget it, uplink speed is as important as download for gaming so forget it, in my opinion.

When I moved last year I researched satellite internet service as I had to get satellite TV. No more cable. :( Satellite internet service is highly unreliable, very slow, and very expensive. So I ended up getting ADSL instead as it was the only other alternative.
