Hi all,
Over in the co-op forum we have been talking about dual channel RAM using nforce2 chipset mobo's, and i have a question about this.
At present my MSI board is starting to take the piss a bit. Won't run dual channel, only single, and having added a gig of corsair (running in single channel) I have also started to get a few checksum errors which also say about memory problem when recovering rar files using par2 files, normal windows operation is fine - this was ok with the old 512mb or ram running in single channel.
So there was me thinking the board is screwed and maybe the new RAM, when I thought maybe this is power related. Obviously from my sig I have a few hard drives attached plus a crappy old geforce 2, dvdrw, cdrw etc running from a Q-Tec 550watt psu. Now I know these PSU's are rubbish, or found out after I bought it to be precise, and I have a nice 480w Enermax waiting to be installed but the question is...
could the psu lack of power cause the problems with the RAM running in dual channel, or is my msi board on its way out.
any thoughts would be great as will be out to buy a new mobo otherwise.
cheers

hmm.. since you used to be able to run it in dual channel even with that 550watt power supply, then it shouldn't be the cause unless its totally worn out, but you can always check your +3.3 rail from your bios or by Motherboard Monitor 5 and see how steady it is..
I rememeber once heard from some peps that after they've changed their psu, they can overclock their memory at a higher frequency/speed..
anyways, that Enermax 480watt sure sounds sweet!! :D, is it the dual +12 rail type? man, i wish i have one of those to pump up my overclock.. as my cheapy Linksworld 430watt can't even do 1.85 vcore stable :(

well with the old psu i managed to run 512 in dual for about 3 days then it stopped, and to be honest i am still reasonable confident that the mobo is the issue but who knows, it is a computer after all :)
psu is http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=123528 and is the dual rail version, sorry.

Have you had that stupid alarm go off m8 when your system has frozen or re-booted? I only have a cheap Ebuyer 500W PSU myself, seems to be fine for the price tbh though a nice Antec or Enermax would be sweet.
That was what kept happening with me and that board, usually when encoding video or burning DVDR .iso images.
Just drove me mental for a week trying to solve things, I gave up and bought the Asus as you know. :(

I know this may not help much, but maybe trying clearing cmos and maybe flash the bios.

cheers guys for the input.
haven't had any alarms apart from when i boot up if RAM is positioned in dual channel mode.
updated the bios to latest version recently so no joy there either.
just decided to give the PC a good clean so got the dyson out and hovered it from dust :)
popped the enermax in and unplugged 3 hard drives. but still no joy with dual channel so gigabyte or asus here i come :) lets hope it likes corsair VS running on dual channel or the RAM goes back to Scan.
not sure about this checksum error though as one loads of pars worked another not, maybe just the files.
cheers all.

Bummer.
My gf is running the Gigabyte GA-7N400-L with dual channel corsir value select, so I know it works.

...you bast...ard, my gf looks like a frog damn it!!!!
Lazza - Its actually a pretty nice board, I was a bit suprised. She is happy with it, cheap but the only problem with it is the 2700 (barton) runs at 60 degrees at full throtle. Even has 5 frickin fans and a copper thermaltake fan. And I only have that oc'ed to 2.1ghz, I am afraid to go any higher. Here I am crapping T thread...

carry on m8, it's not my birthday anymore :)
Maybe try giving the ram some more juice? I know that my corsair stick loves 2.6v stock and 2.7/2.8 overclocked...

well couldn't find the gigabyte in stock anywhere today so got the Asus a7n8xe - deluxe and very happy with it. all set up and windows reloaded in a couple of hours, and all going well.
now running an xp3000 cpu and think the stock AMD fan/heatsink is gonna have to go.
happy again now :)

You are not going to believe this m8 but guess what happened to me again yesterday? http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/q/bawling.gif
Yep system hanging all the time during encodes or DVDR burns even with the new board, 9200 Radeon card getting very hot too ... no fan on it. Wondering now if it's either the vid card, memory or the nForce drivers doing this. Fitted a new stick of RAM now and on test so will see. http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/q/weep.gif
OK, burned a DVDR - that worked so will now try a CCE encode to pressure it. lol
