I have been looking for a program that will allow me to set up a private p2p network with one or two friends to share files over broadband connection. The set-up I would like is for each user to be able to connect directly and browse whatever folder the host has designated as shared, without logging onto one of the general p2p things, like Gnutella, etc.

Is there such an animal?

Oh yeah ... it should be easy for me to understand

I found one called BigSpeed that seems to fit the bill, but can't for the life of me figure out how to make it work. Their help is very sketchy.

Maybe there is something else out there that is easier?

You could set up an FTP server. Not really the answer your looking for, but it would do the same thing. Just allow your friends to be able to upload and download off of you. For a handful of people, it seems your going to a lot of trouble. Unless you guys are really "active" you won't have that much new to share, and an FTP would do the trick.

my 2 cents for you to think over.........

Have a look at Direct Connect (http://www.neo-modus.com).

I don't really remember how it works, but I think one person has to set up the server (hub), and other people can connect to it. Of course, you can set it so that only you and your friends can access it.

Give WASTE a try as well. Some friends and I have played around with it before. Check here (http://www.freedomware.org/waste/) for more info...

As far as I know Direct Connect isn't compatible with routers.

Hope that helps you make a decission.

Well, if you're behind a router, then Direct Connect is not the only thing that "isn't compatible". You just have to know which ports the program uses, and forward it. :)

Right you are, as I'm finding out!!!

Easy to say "You just have to know which ports the program uses, and forward it." harder to do, when one doesn't have a clue, and the router help files leave a bit to be desired! :insane:

Oh well, part of the learning process. I'll figure it out eventually. No real reason to do it anyway, other than another way to expand my hobby, but now that I have started, I am going to keep plugging away till I learn how to make it work. :)

Thanks for the help

Hehe, maybe I should have said that you'll need to find out which port the programs uses and forward them. BTW, Direct Connect also has a passive mode which lets you connect without having to forward ports.

Taken from Direct Connect's FAQ (http://www.neo-modus.com/?page=Help&categoryID=2#Q9):

Who needs to use passive mode?
If you’re using an internet connection sharing device such as a broadband router, or a firewall product to protect your computer, you will need to use Direct Connect is passive mode.

What ports does active mode need?
By default, Direct Connect uses random ports for TCP and UDP data. This can be configured in the Direct Connect preferences. In the preferences window, choose ‘Connection’ and click the ‘Advanced…’ button. A new dialog will appear. From here you’ll be able to configure Direct Connect’s port usage.

Or you just might set up a dc hub, and set exactly what port you need. You dont need a standard port as long as you just remember not to used the "well-known" port numbers.
