Dear Folks
I have WinXP Pro and need to upgrade HD and change PC.
1. Can I take out my old HD and put it into a different PC - will it run?
2. How do I easily upgrade from a 160Gb to 250Gb - without re-installing programs?
ANY ideas and advice would be appreciated.

1. If you mean can you put your existing HD in a new PC, without doing anything else and have it run as the boot drive .... NO ... the reason being all your drivers will be different.
2. If you want to replace the 160gb with a 250gb, you will have to reinstall, unless you use something like Symantec Ghost to copy an image from the old drive to the new.

If you have Ghosting software both tasks can be completed successfully.
1. This can be absolutely be accomplished using Sysprep which is included with your Windows XP CD. This tool will prppare your image for ghosting and when placed in the new system all hardware will be redected and installed. Several Sysprep tutorials are available on the net. Sysprep info can be found
HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302577&Product=winxp).
2. Just Ghost the drive or partition.

if you dont want to format and start again you should be able to just put the drive in a new p.c and xp will install the new drivers for you. I would recommend all the device drivers from device manager be deleted so you dont have the drivers on there from the old system otherwise there may be conflicts, then after a reboot the new drivers will be installed. but the best option is a nice clean install for your new p.c to ensure everything runs smooth.

This is an overcomplication. All you need to do is put the HD in the new machine and boot immediately to the XP cd (supposing you have a bootable XP cd and not one of those shocking recovery discs that get bundled with off the shelf purchases) - run a "repair" install and hey presto, your new devices will be installed and your old stuff will be history.
This guide (http://www.theeldergeek.com/move_harddrive.htm) is very comprehensive, and that site is very informative and well worth bookmarking IMHO.
