Newsgroup question

Hi, I'm using Grabit and Pipex server was wondering why it takes so long for it to update a group and read messages (10-30 minutes)? What port does newgroup programs use? Thanks

I'd use a better reader... NewsBin Pro or Forte Agent to begin with. That should take care of the problem for you. :)

so many possibilities here really.

could be the app, could be the group you are looking at having millions of headers.

nntp uses port 119 so it is possible that Pipex have throttled it but unlikely. It may be that Pipex, as per most ISP nntp servers are just crap. The best one to try in the UK is Clara at about £8/month for unlimited or, internationally, I use Newshosting for about the same money

I've used Grabit a few times, can't say I found it slow at downloading headers, but there are a few posts on the Grabit forum from people saying there's a problem with processing headers when the header count gets into the millions, aparently the processing can take a very long time.
As said it could be worth trying another program to see if there's any difference, Have a look at NewsLeecher (www.newsleecher.com), a great binarie downloader that supports multiple servers....XPAT and plenty of other features, but there is a bug that leaves some files incomplete, but for some reason this doesn't seem to effect everyone.
