Hey guys, got a quick question- "back in the day" when i last did a clean re-install- i partitioned my 120gb hd (with the XP cd) 40:80. Anyway having since bought a dvd writer etc. i find i'm constantly filling the 80gb hd (pc doubles as multimedia server for the two xboxes in the house)
anyways i'm finding when i do stuff with dvd back ups etc- i end up having to to output to the 40gb hd that is meant for system and program files.
I was reading the bumph.....
Partition Magic is the only real harddisk manager for DOS, Windows 3.x, 95, 98, NT Workstation, OS/2, Linux, Windows 2000 and XP. Partition Magic makes the creation, deletion, resizing, splitting and re-combination of partitions easy. All this without reformatting! Convert partitions: FAT to FAT32, NTFS and HPFS, FAT32 to FAT, NTFS to FAT and FAT32, primairy partitions to extended and back again. Partition Magic stand for the safe management of every harddisk.
anyways is this really the case could i move the 40:80 split to say 10:110 without any loss of data? (currently have too much work on and too many files on the hd to really go through burning everything to dvd-r and then reinstalling)

I have used PM for years and I swear by it. I have never had any data loss myself, but I have seen others post who say they have had it corrupt partitions. Personally, I think it is due to user error or the partition itself being slightly corrupt and PM just pushed it over the edge.
As always, it's a good idea to back up your critical data before performing repair work on your drive, But PM will allow you to resize partitions without data loss.

I have also used PM for years and changed partitions without any data loss. Personally I wouldn't dream of putting XP in a partition as small as 10gb. I know it's gonna cost but why not fit an extra hdd. If you're storing xbox files on it it's probably a better option anyway. Samsung 160gb £69-99 this week at Aldi.

Yup ... can confirm above comments. I've always found PM very stable & reliable haven't lost any data yet ;)

I've been using http://www.osloader.com/ lately and have found it works just as well or better than PM. The reason is it's just a little simpler. Both are quite good though!
I'm currently using this on 2 HD's on my 'puter one has win2000 pro (40gig hd, master) the other has Win XP home (80gig hd, slave) and I've not lost any info, data, at all. It boots perfectly every time with no problems. :)

OSloader is a boot manager - you can't resize partitions with it m8 :)
To add yet another affirmation to those above, I've used PM a number of times to resize populated partitions and never had any trouble. It doesn't hurt to back up any vital stuff (particularly as you have a DVD-RW) but you should be able to use it with confidence :t_up:

I know that... the issue from what I picked up from the thread was losing data. And someone mentioned putting another HD on board so of course I had to pipe in with the OS loader, it does not resize partitions, correct. Why you would want to do that in the first place is beyound me but what can I say.
When I partitioned in the past I always gave myself more than enough room so I wouldn't have to put myself through the pain of resizing later... :wavey:
But PM is one of the best, if not the best. But I had problems with PM when I did add another HD but with the OSloader they booted no problem. It's just up to you on what you want to do I guess. (HD's these days aren't all that expensive so it is another option for you to consider.) Works a treat for me.
I should have explained myself a little better there mate, sorry... :)
