The small file you downloaded is only a torrent file, which is the instruction set to connect to the tracker to download the actual file. The way BitTorrent works, as I understand, is a BitTorrent client (which is a BT download manager) must be installed in order to associate the Torrent files with the client. Only then can the download be started once you click on a Torrent file or a Torrent link. Do a Google search, that's all I can say.

you need a bt client proggy to allow you to connect to another bt client and d/l the files. but be careful where the link comes from. the most popular place to get torrents is supernova, but i have friends who have had legal letters from universal, paramount sony, etc threatening court if they do not cease

It's fine to d/l these files, just install a small prog called Peer Guardian and it will block all those nasty IP ranges for you. :)
