I took my laptop with my wireless card into college today, and for some reason there are 2 wireless networks detected there...i guess they are something to do with the college

I dont want to do anything bad, I would just like to utilize them to surf the web (assuming thats what they are there for) but how would I go about it? I could connect to one of em (the other was encrypted) but as I knew no settings for the access point i didnt really know how to go about getting net access...knowing the gateway IP etc

How do I go about it? Ive got a Belkin 802.11g card

ask the admins if you can use one, if that's what they are there for.

there really isn't much else you can do unless you were lucky enough to hit a wireless router with direct access to the net, then you know the gateway. you could in theory do a net view command to find what other machines are there. if the gateway was set up it poorly it may respond with an ip to use, but best to stick with my first idea.

if you can connect to one, try setting your card up to use DHCP, if they are using a dhcp server that should get you an ip address and gateway etc settings.

they may also use a proxy server, try looking at a current pc there in internet settings for that, however it's unlikely you will be able to see this info.

other than that, ask an admin like previously suggested, it may have been set up for the type of use you are after

Depending on your uni you should be able to ask someone in the IT department about the wireless access. They just setup a huge network here and where offering people with laptops free wireless cards to access the system, ours runs on a proxy but it's there for you to access it, so just ask.
