The question....
In most any other windows os's you can use msconfig in 'run' box and change the programs in the start bootup of your computer. In win2000 you can't use 'msconfig' so my question is how do I change my programs in startup boot since I'd like to change what boots up and what doesn't... thanks. ;)
I don't need all these programs slowing me down at bootup/startup...

you will need to either use a 3rd party tweaking app or go into the registry to hkey local machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run and remove any apps from there that you don't want to run at bootup.

or go here and download msconfig from xp and use it in 2000.

only thing is, you have to run it from the folder you downloaded it to, meaning you can't type run "msconfig" and have it come up.

Yes you can.
Just copy the "msconfig" file into the C:\WINNT\system32 folder. You will then be able to execute it from the "Run" box just as you would in any other Windows Operating System.

Or adding the directory where it is installed to the path will have the same effect.

Or even better than msconfig.exe IMHO are Mike Lin's superb little duo of Startup Control Panel which is FREE from:- http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

And run in conjunction with Startup Monitor :- http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

You will now have total control of your Windows startup and will be able to stop things ever getting in the startup in the first place. I never, ever build a system without putting these two babies on before loading any other progs myself. :)

Two excellent choices and certainly worthwile alternatives to "msconfig".
What's ironic though is that I've recommended these quite a bit in inquiries like these but have never used them personally. Thanks for the revisit.

They were bloatier, were not as good and got in the way.
Really don't think that they can be improved upon much and it's about time I put something in his tips tin the amount of times I've installed them. :o
