I also use ad aware and spybot search and destroy,as long as you keep them updated you should be o.k with those, avg is a good trojan detector (which is also free ).

Good free solutions:
Adaware, spybot, Avast! (highest rated free AV software) and either Sygate or ZoneAlarm firewall.
To my mind these would be the bare minimum you should be using to keep your pc in good health.

bare minimum? what else could the average pc user possibly need
google toolbar to keep those annoying popups away, and to search for everything else :clown:
and mozilla when you've finally had it with M$ updates that break instead of fix.
not necessary like the other apps, but useful.

bare minimum? what else could the average pc user possibly need:laugh: Bare minimum simply because the firewall and AV solutions I posted were freeware solutions and aren't as highly rated as some commercial software. Also some people like to run additional apps for pop up blocking, online spyware detection and so on.
So, I meant bare minimum in terms of software quality.

The average user should also be running Spybot S & D 1.3 (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download) and Spywareblaster 3.1 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html). As anyone can tell you that's tried to remove spyware, it's much easier to prevent it than remove it.
