get a fire wall and when in doubt just use the free online scan from housecall.antivirus.com or other site like that...

For free AV go for avast (http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1016.html), for free firewall get either Sygate (http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm) or Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp), both do a free version. And for your spyware Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download) S & D and/or Adaware (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button).
