Doing a project for college and im setting up a little network..few client PC's, all running XP Pro, with the server running 2000 Server.
Using a domain because I wanted each user to have their own profile space etc and a domain seemed the easiest way to do it
The first problem is very slow logon, it logs on fine after about 2 or 3 minutes, but that is too long...the roaming profile is only about 500k for any user so its not that slowing it down.
Read somewhere that its probably the DNS server, the clients arnt pointing to it right...however how do I check this? Im not even sure Ive set DNS up right...it seems very complicated for such a small network
The second problem is not as urgent but still very annoying. At the minute ive only got one client PC connected up to the server (as I didnt have ay more PC's and it was adaquatre for testing) I now however have a laptop running XP Pro which I want to add to the domain. So in System Properties>Computer name I try to connect it to the domain. Its ok until it asks for a username and password for a user on that domain. Whatever I type in, an error just comes up saying access denied...and I dont know why. When i typed administrator in, not a user, the whole machine just hung.
Im 99% sure thats how I did it on the other machine and it worked fine.
Ive got the laptop added to 'computers' in active directory but it makes no difference. One thing tho, despite calling the working cient 'bedroom_pc1' or something, its created another entry in computers in AD, called a really long random load of chracters followed by .homenet (homenet being the domain name)
Any ideas?
I also do apologise for the awful spelling and grammer in this post, its because im typing this on a hopeless laptop keyboard and it misses a lot of letters
