I have to do a report on why pcs have dominated the market rather than macs ?

here (http://scotland.gojobsite.co.uk/Careernews/advice/mac_pc.html) is an article about it, I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I am sure a search on Google will bring up a lot more links if it isn't.

I use both mac and pc machines at my work place. I would say that mac is very smooth and secure. It runs without any lag or downtime and is still fast even after 10 days of uptime. I use it for things such as word processing, internet browsing, and writing business letters and such. For the PC, it is more of a personal computer. I would rather have a PC because of the mass majority of the programs for it. I can do everything on it from video editing to dvd conversions. Even though there may be a lot of security faults, you can still download the patches and fixes. Games have a pretty large selection because most game makers target PC consumers. The mac consumers only get a partial amount of the gaming network. So for me, the one I'd rather work with is a PC for maximum achievement, but Macs are also good for daily work.

Although I never have owned one, I would prefer a MAC for any multimedia work. If you are a home user and just want to do music, videos, and word processing then a Mac would be good. of course if you are into downloading all kinds of programs and stuff just to mess around and such a PC is for you.

Getting back to the question in hand, in my opinion the reason for this is largely to do with the good marketing and the ruthless approach to business of M$. That led to great investment into advancing PC technology and greater software support for PC's (much of it freely available on the web) and now Mac is "catching up" but has missed out in the crunch development period and therefore only takes something like 10% of the market.

I totally agree with San. Mac is catching up, probably becuase of M$ cant put out an OS without having to patch patches and all the other bullsh1te, and people are finally starting to go the other route.

Yeah, macs are getting pretty popular. A lot more stores are offering more apple products and people are getting to the style of iPods. Apple is also porting its program to windows and windows is doing the same for apple. For example is the iTunes software and the Microsoft Office programs. We should soon be able to see more ports in the future products.

Reason for all the ports would be the switch to OSX. Now you have OSX ports of ffmpeg, mplayer, VideoLAN, etc. Never would have happened for OS9 or whatever.
As for MS not putting out a decent OS. You don't have to use a MS OS on your PC plus remember that MS pumped money into Apple.
Also back in the early days you had plenty of IBM clones, but if you wanted an apple there was no such choice of a clone. Even now if I want a PC I have a choice between AMD or Intel as well as I guess Via.

macs are better for producing a final product as is shown by the selection of design/studio orientated programs, most studios will use a mac. I think apple have never really been mainstream like pcs (home user targetted) up until now.
I have an iMac at the mo which has been switched on 3 months since reboot, still happily performing tasks as a cleanly booted machine
Whereas my XP machine requires a reboot every couple of days or so
Apples change in marketing has also had an effect on how the company is percieved by their target audience, i dont think its a matter of catching up with MS , its more a case of making themselves more appealing to the home user

I notice Mac seems to be much more widely used here in Aus than it was in the UK, at least in the circles that I move in.
I believe Macs to be a superior quality machine, it is the marketing tactics of Micro$oft that have caused it to dominate Market share, people have every right to be sceptical of Bill Gates and Micro$oft when it comes to product quality but noone can argue their business skills

one of my favorite things is going to the game isles at the store. for the pc there are hundreds of games and for the mac there is about five.

PC's are the overall majority, but MACs are more stable. You may not find games for a MAC but you will find every sort of multimedia tool for a MAC, Profesional media has ditched PC's and switched to Macs and so have many schools. I learned alot of graphic programs on mac, they were more stable and a bit faster than their PC counterparts.

Prefer using PC's myself...but do a lot of work in recording studio's and you really MUST have a mac for that...more stable/reliable etc...
Hate the one buttoned mouse though!

Done plenty of work in the past on Mac's using Illustrator, PhotoShop, Lightwave, etc. all pre OSX and I would have to say that they were slower than PC's and crashed at least twice as often.
Yeah those one buttoned mice really do suck, especially the round ones.
