Hey All!

Last night I realized some strange noises from my HDD, they begin with a few clicks and then a loud beeping kind of sound. (Read PS.) is a sound byte, sorry its abt 500Kb, I had to keep the quality so u could hear the sounds.

The loud noise that is there all the time is the bottom mounted fan, so the HDD is not over heating. Any ideas? Its a fairly new Maxtor 7200RPM 80Gb.

Thanks Again,

Rikkelz

PS. I dunno what is wrong with this stupid host, I cant host a wma file. Mods, can I please have permission to have an attachment

PSS. Give this a try. Here (http://rikkelz.100megsfree5.com/dl.htm)(click link next to DVDRG, rename .eee file to .wma) (the big noise is at about 19seconds)

Almost certainly a drive on it's last legs. Back any important stuff up asap and replace it.

Maxtor owners don't need to download the sound clip because it will just sound like normal disc activity to you.

Oh happy day!

Sounds like your every Maxtor drive to meHow helpful. I hear there were a few boeing plane crashes recently, I guess that means all boeings are rubbish

Rikkelz, drives making unusual sounds are not good news. I'd suggest you back up everything which is important to you ASAP as its possible your drive will drop dead. I've had a couple of drives develop a case of the clickys in the last couple of years, one of them died within a week but the other is still working to this day. (colbol, both were seagate... i guess i should bag them now).

Have you tried a mouse trap ? :D

A good time to start backing stuff up ... me thinks !

Yep, what everyone else said - get everything important backed up off that drive. Remember to save stuff like e-mails, fonts, game saves, etc. etc. :) If that hd is still under warrenty, you might as well send it back before it gives up the ghost, if it's not I'd plan to go shopping :)

Thanks for all the replys! What should I sya to them, must I say: "Hi, I bought this from you half a year ago, it makes some clicking noises sometimes can I have a new one?"?

The thing is it only does it sometimes!! Its been silent for the past day!! Strange...

Another problem, this drive is the only 80gb I have... IE, I cant backup all the info!! Unless I get 115 writables!!! Well anyway thanks 4 the advise...

Are there no other possible causes??

Thanks,

Rikkelz

ring maxtor, tell them you have this problem, and that you can't backup as you do not have another drive. When i did that they sent me a replacement drive, and i then backed up and sent them the dying drive.

i seem to remember it was on the condition that if they could find no problem with the drive i would have to pay a restocking fee, but that may have been on one of the other many faulty items i have been unlucky enough to buy
