not so sure that question explains what i mean :insane:

i want to be able to record the actions on my desktop i.e moving mouse cursor and clicking an icon, so that it can be played as a video file. whats the best way to do this?

can anyone recommend a program?

SnagIt is quite good (http://www.techsmith.com/products/snagit/default.asp), also see here (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=screen+capture&btnG=Google+Search), and here's some free ones (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=screen+capture+freeware&btnG=Search), never tried them though.

I think Macromedia ColdBreeze does this and saves the movement as flash.

theres an excellent program called Camtasia Studio 2. it captures video output and you can even select the area you want to capture. has many features too. check it out.
