I'm going to be trying to connect my PC and my roommates PC together via a crossover cable so that I can steal some files from him. Will this process be the same as it was to connect my Xbox to my PC to transfer files? Do I just connect the cable to the machines, set the IP address' for both, set whichever drive or folders to able to be shared, and then connect through FlashFXP to get the files? Or is there something else I should do? Thanks for any help, I just want to make sure I get it right without screwing up eithers machine.

Plug the network cable into both machines. Set up IP's (10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 for example) then you can either set up the shared folders/printers yourself or use the home networking wizard. Thats usually just the drill... Dunno what FlashFXP is but if it is for copying files u can do it in 'My Network Places" or map a network drive

FlashFXP is an ftp client, can be done either way (FTP or Filesharing) but with an ftp client you won't have to create/modify/add a network place (which will need to be the same for both pc's if you choose to use "file sharing")

But if I set up the IP's like Rickelz said all I'll need to do then is make the default gateway on the PC with the files the same as the IP of the PC that I want to transfer the files to. Then use an FTP client to transfer the files, correct? Do I need to set up an FTP Client on both machines?

I think just do it the simple way...
Enable sharing of files in Network Properties, Then right click on the C Drive of your mates PC, then click Sharing, then set the drive to read-only or full. Then go to your PC and type in the address bar "\\(mates PC name) then you should se a shared folder. that will be his drive.
I think thats what you were asking for? Or have I gone off track?
Anyway not a problem,

Rikkelz way is easier and you dont even need to explicitly share the C: just go to the run dialogue box on your pc and type <A href="file://\"mates">\\"mates PC name or IP address"\C$. The C: on all windows machines is set to be shared as a hidden share default. It will ask for a password though, just use a password from an account on your mates machine.
