Okay, I got my computer back up and running and my DVD-ROM drive is ripping VERY slow (sounds like a DMA/PIO mode issue). I just did a DVD5 with my 16x Samsung 816B and it took over 10 minutes to rip and normally with this machine it takes about 5 minutes. The other thing is that it said the average read rate was 4.4x and the max was just over 6x (DVD Decrypter). I have tried installing and removing programs to no avail. Could someone refresh my memory on how to go about checking and resetting the DMA mode (yes the idiots guide would be appreciated on this one).

You can also set in the BIOS but location varies depending on mobo. My mobo has it in the advanced device settings. :P

Keep in mind also that most DVD drives will rip a recorded DVD (DVD5) much slower than a pressed DVD (DVD9) because of reflectivity issues.
Test the drive with a DVD9 disc to see if it resumes the normal rip speeds.

Yeah, I know about the recordables ripping slower. The movie I mentioned above was an original DVD5 so it definitely should be going faster than that. The drive used to rip those (original single layered discs) at 10x-12x on average and this is on the same computer with the exact same specs. *EDIT* Crap. The DMA is available on both channels/drives. I just wonder why it is ripping funny now. I guess it could be that the drive is starting to wear out (I use it for a bunch of different things). The weird thing is that it only seems to do this with 1 movie but it isn't scratched up or dirty and on the other movies that I tried they rip twice as fast but the ripping speed fluctuates quite a bit. It could be a problem with DVD Decrypter itself I suppose. I will explore a couple of other options. This is just weird though.

Yeah, it seems to be preforming pretty close to normal so I won't mess with it. It could mean it needs to be cleaned or that the drive is going out on me. (I hope it's not the later).
