Alcohol software were going to release an addon for Alcohol120% called Ice Alcohol for doing such things.
XviD what? AVI? MKV? MP4? RAW m4v?
Although I wouldn't recommend it Nero should be able to convert an XviD AVI just fine. Probably also mp4.
If it is an AVI, try TMPGEnc to convert to a VCD complaint MPEG. You may however have issues with the audio if it is vbr mp3 or AC3.

Doesn't look like it. There were also plans for a audio/data mastering plugin.
Generally by the extension, although this can be wrong.
Just XviD would be an m4v by the way, this is a RAW mpeg4 video stream, no audio, no headers, etc.
Chances are that you have an AVI.

Wait for what software?
If you hate converting you might want to look into a standalone DivX player. These will also play some XviD files.

XviD is just a codec. As I said if it is an AVI TMPGENc will convert it. As will QuEnc, CCE, Main Concept, Canopus, etc. Basically any software than can convert an AVI to a VCD compliant mpg.
You just burn the AVI's as data. As I said though, such players won't play all XviD files.

Having used various proggies I have found this one is better than TMPEG and does every codec I have thrown at it.
MainConcept MPEG Encoder

Probably because by default Main Concept uses directshow decoders.
TMPGEnc will convert any AVI that you have the correct codec installed for.
