Recently upgraded from windows server 2000 to server 2008 R2 and I cannot get the graphics card to be properly detected.

I installed all the latest drivers from the motherboard and graphics card website, rebooted and still no luck. (I think installing the graphics driver increased the range of resolution I have but the card is still not detected)

Whenever I go to the screen resolution option, it still says Generic PnP Monitor on standard VGA adapter.

I have set PCI-e as the standard in the BIOS but still no luck.

I have an ASRock K10N78D motherboard and the graphics card is a XFX ATI 5450. Any idea what is going wrong?

Did you try the ATI Catalyst Suite (http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx)?

yeah, tried that too but still no luck. I'm using a TV as my monitor just now, does that have an effect?

Nope, it's not the TV, it's because the ATI drivers don't support Win Server OS'es. One thing we can try is to install the driver manually. Remember when you clicked on the Catalyst file to install the driver, it self-extracted to a folder \ATI on the C: drive, you need to open Device Manager to update the driver manually then browse to the \ATI folder to update the driver. It's recommended that you do not install (uncheck) the CCC option. Please try it to see if you can install the driver.

you've confused me there, possibly in part due to me working off a hangover. I'll try to do what you said and see if it works

The ATI Catalyst suite comes in a package that will extract itself to the \ATI folder on the C: drive when you run it to install the drivers. You can't extract it with a ZIP utility but in order to install the drivers manually from the package, you need to have the contents in this \ATI folder. Because you already run the Catalyst suite to install it before, I believe there is an \ATI folder on the C: drive. Auto install didn't work so you need to do the manual install.
