Hey guys,
My brother in law has a Toshiba laptop and it won't load up at all.. All i get is the Toshiba Leading Innovation screen, then it will come up with 'BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart'.
I can press F12 and F2 but they dont help at all, F12 eventually comes up with the BOOTMGR message. And also nothing happens when i press F8 to get the restore menu up.. Can anyone help????
Thanks

Try booting up with the Windows CD or DVD, the same Windows version that he had on the laptop, and run a Windows repair. Is F8 the key that's used to restore the Windows setup on the laptop?

The laptop never came with a windows cd when he bought it, I think F8 key acted as the windows disc because it took you to the Toshiba HHD Recovery.. Have you any idea why this message keeps appearing? Thanks :-)

As Van said, run the recovery console. If that doesn't do it, you may need to reinstall Windows (would reformat if possible as well). It's typically a Windows issue, not an issue with the laptop hardware.

The BOOTMGR is missing message tells you that either the HDD has stopped working or the files on it were corrupted due to bad sectors, corrupt files, power glitch, etc. . We can try a Windows repair with a Windows disc to repair the corrupt files and BOOTMGR. You can also restore the laptop to the state when it was sent to you by using the recovery function (F8) but all data you have on the HDD will be erased. If you do not have any important data on the HDD, the simplest thing to do is to run the recovery. If you have important data on the HDD, you will need to do a Windows repair so you don't lose the data. In this case you need to use a Windows disc that is the same version as the Windows setup installed on the laptop.

None of the data on the laptop is important so won't be missed... And when you say 'Power Glitch'.. The laptop will only work if it's plugged into the mains. But, the end of the charger that plugs into the laptop has to be wedged at a random angle for it to realise its actually plugged in.. if you dont wedge it, it seems loose and will fall out, if that makes sence :S

Power glitches are from noisy or dirty AC lines. It is recommended to use a power surge protector b/w the laptop & the AC outlet.
