External HDD Problem

When i plug in my external WD HDD (via USB) it doesnt show up but when i go into manage and storage i can see it but i cant format it.
Ive also tried to take it out the case and connect it via Sata into the computer but there it doesnt show up at all!
Could anyone help me with this problem please?

Before you can format a new drive, you need to initialize it first (partition). A good video (http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/format-hard-drive.html) to watch.
