it's a usb-h16x i believe it's made by emprex , and although the drive shows up that model number, it was fitted about 3 weeks ago by a local computer shop as a new internal dvdrw(supplied and fitted for a mere £60:eek:) the couple that paid it are in their 60s and know nothing about computers, but refuse to go back to the shop, as this is apparently the latest in a string of rip offs.

the drive reads cds and reads my backup dvds, but i can't get it to read their original dvds, but it's not the discs as they play fine in my 3 pioneer drives, tried cleaning the laser and wondered about a firmware update, but can't find any fw info for it anywhere. it's currently on B02V

thanks for any ideas

btw. tried it on xp pro and windows 7 , so not a compatability issue

I'd suggest you replace the DVD drive with a brand name drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007589%20600003509&IsNodeId=1&name=DVD%20Burner).

Sorry, you can find a cheap drive here (http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=2&cat=27) (for UK).

Maybe the drive is region locked? normally if a drive stops reading DVD media it won't read any, original or backup

That's a good guess.
