If you install the Realtek 10/100M (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=7&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false) Fast Ethernet driver from the link Phil provided, you should be able to connect to the Internet via the wired adapter. I believe you're having problems with the Intel 3945 AGB wireless adapter:
All Drivers Download (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Wireless+Networking&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+WiFi+Products&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+PRO%2fWireless+3945ABG+ Network+Connection)
Go to the link above, in the box Select an Operating System, select the OS you're running (XP Pro 32-bit in this case) to download the latest driver.

Your laptop has both Realtek 10/100 LAN (wired) and Intel wireless ABG. You'll need to install the drivers for both. Please go to the 2 links I posted and download the drivers for Windows XP, which is what you're running. Are you trying to connect via wire (CAT-5/5e cable) or wireless?

ive loaded both but am trying to connect wireless, when i had vista running on it, i pressed FN/F1 and it connected instantly.

After you've installed the driver for both wired and wireless adapters, please open Control Panel/Device Manager to make sure they're working OK. In Device Manager under Network Adapters, do you see both Realtek 10/100 adapter and Intel 3945 wireless adapter? Doubleclick on each of them to open their Properties, if it says this device is working OK then they're ready to go. :)

ive loaded both but am trying to connect wireless, when i had vista running on it, i pressed FN/F1 and it connected instantly.
It's because the wireless setup in Vista is quite different from the wireless setup in XP. In Vista and Windows 7, things are more convenient and automatic with Network and Sharing Center. In XP, the wireless setup is not that advanced :) . After you've checked Device Manager to make sure the wireless adapter is installed properly as I mentioned above, please read this page (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/wireless.mspx) to set up the wireless (please read the section Connect your computers and devices).

in the device manager there was only this one 'Intel 3945 wireless adapter' and its properties are working, the only ones that are not are, SM bus controller, Video controller and Video controller (VGA compatible). update ive added the driver for the SM bus

Please give me some minutes to find the chipset & video drivers for you. Your laptop can run XP perfectly, we only need to install the correct drivers for it which would take some time to find and that's why the laptop maker doesn't support XP on it.
=====
In the meantime, please download and install the Realtek 10/100 Fast Ethernet driver for the wired adapter. You need to go to the Realtek 10/100M link I had above then click on one of the download links for "WinXP 32/64 and Win2K Auto Installation Program (SID:1404940)" to download the driver.

Video Driver for XP 32-bit (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18774&lang=eng) - Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Since you've already installed the SM Bus driver, we do not need to bother with the chipset driver. Please install the video driver and tell me what else we still need the drivers for (check Device Manager).

right van all device drivers are working after installing this Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 thanks but still no wireless connection, could it be a faulty FN/F1 ?
the problem is not with the wired

I know the problem was not with wired but it'd be nice to have all drivers installed so you should install the driver for the Realtek network adapter also. I do not think the FN/F1 keys are bad. Did you follow the instructions by MS in the link I had in post #11? You need to set up the wireless in Windows before you can connect to the Internet. Do you see the wireless icon in the System Tray next to the clock?

firstly i want to thank you for all your hard work on this, ive printed off and had a read through the wireless network link, but i am not PC literate and none of it is making any sense. there is no wireless icon near my clock but my sons DS and my cell phone are hooked up through wifi. the lap top is a friends that i messed up when i put my copy of vista on it. i had to format it and put on xp because he didn't have any discs. I really dont want to mess around with my system because everything is running smoothly, so i think i will just give him the laptop back and tell him to sort it himself.

When you're running Windows XP SP3 (as you said in post #1), if the wireless adapter is working correctly (as shown in Device Manager), you should see the wireless icon in the System Tray. If for some reason it does not show up there, you can try Control Panel/Network then select View Available Wireless Networks. It will show you all the wireless networks that the wireless adapter has detected. Just select the one you want to connect then click Connect. You'll be asked for the Passkey, enter it in the passkey boxes then click Connect.

the laptop is running xp sp3, my pc has vista home 32x, the device manager shows everything working, no errors. In the 'Control Panel/Network then select View Available Wireless Networks' no wireless network is found?
i appreciate all yours, and Phil's help but i have had my fill of his problems, i did think it would be a simple matter of putting the right drivers on it and away we go, but nothing goes smoothly for me.
thanks again, you guys are always there when I need you and i probably will again.
thank you and i am sorry to have caused you so much hassle.
I'm off to bed now
goodnight

The driver only makes it work properly in Windows, you'll need to tell it to connect to the network of your choice. Otherwise, it can't connect to any of the wireless networks it's discovered.

In the 'Control Panel/Network then select View Available Wireless Networks' no wireless network is found? If you could connect to the wireless from your Vista laptop/desktop, try reset the XP TCP/IP. Please download XP TCP/IP Reset (http://www.filecluster.com/downloads/XP-TCP-IP-Repair.html), install and run it then click Reset TCP/IP and Repair Winsock buttons. Reboot the system to see if it can discover the wireless networks.

Please tell him to try what I suggested in #20. If that does not help, try removing the wireless adapter in Device Manager but do not delete the driver then reboot the system to let the system reinstall and reset the wireless adapter.

Recently I had to reinstall my Amilo LI 2735 and I couldn't believe how hard it was to find working XP drivers, they only offer Vista ones on the Fujitsu-Siemens site :t_down: ...so after struggling many hours I finally got my PC running properly. I made a pack of them drivers, which could possibly help someone else in need:
