When you install your new copy, the installation wizard will ask you what disk drive/partition to install on.
This will format the disk/partition and install a clean version, overwriting anything current.
There is no need to pre-format.

It is a good idea for you to secure all the drivers for the hardware included in the laptop in case they are not inclusive in you Windows XP installation.
The manufacturer's website may offer downloads for the model in question.

Like Phil said, just select the partition you want to install Windows on and tell the setup to format it.
Also, as BlackDiamondJr said, you need to have the XP drivers ready. If you need help to find the drivers, please tell the make/model of the laptop.

When you run Windows XP setup, it'll show you all available hard disks and partitions that it can see. Just select the HDD or partition on which you want to install Windows XP.

For drivers, please go to the Medion website (http://www.medionusa.com/), click on Customer Care / Download Library (More), enter 2592 in the MD/LT- box then click Search. It'll give you all available downloads for the laptop.
cheers Van Nugent for all your help:cheers:

If you have problems or something you'd like to ask during & after the installation, please post back.

Let's check Device Manager and please tell me what DM says about the soundcard? Does it say what make/model the soundcard is? When you installed the soundcard driver you downloaded, did it give you an error/warning message?

I just downloaded the audio driver from Medion and it turned out to be the Realtek AC'97 driver. Please go to this Realtek AC'97 driver download page (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false) to download the driver for your OS (XP).

Also, please make sure the volume control is not at 0 or on Mute. :)
Edit: We need to install XP-SP2 (http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html) then update it to XP-SP3 (http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html) for XP to run better.

Please check Device Manager to see what it shows for the soundcard and if there is a yellow ! ?
Edit: Also, remember to install SP2 & SP3.
