Hi Guys, :wavey:
I need some help and advice regarding an upgrade. I can’t decide on a motherboard/CPU combination. I was thinking of a Gigabyte 7N400Pro2 and an Athlon XP3200+ CPU or a 3000 Athlon64 on a suitable motherboard.
Apart from the price, is there a big performance difference between the Athlon64 3000 and the Athlon XP3200+ Cpu’s.
Any advice/comments will be appreciated.
Cheers,
Jessica
Athlon 64 is 64 bit and uses registered damn.

I think the short answer at the moment will be no there isn't as most software is designed for 32 bit hardware. As more software is written for 64 bit applications you may see more of a difference, although, it will also depend on what sort of applications you run ie you may see a greater difference if you run processor intensive applications as oppposed to the odd bit of word processing that will run just as quickly on a far slower machine.
The AMD64 will beat the XP3200+ even at 32 bit apps. It also has a higher FSB and a built in Memory Controler, and More cache then the XP.

well there is something we agree on ps2wiz, the athlon64 is a far better processor and will only get better as more things come out in 64bit format

Hi Guys,
So, what are you saying? Should I go for the Athlon XP3200+ or the Athlon64 3000? Am I right in thinking that the 64bit CPU is no faster than the XP3200+ CPU. But, it will be in the near future.
Are there any compatibility problems with the Athlon64?
Let me know what you think.
Jessica
The AMD64 is faster then the athlon xp in present day.

HI ps2wiz (http://www.dvdrom-guide.com/forums/member.php?u=337),
Thanks for the reply.
I will now probably go for the Athlon64 3200. I was thinking of using it with a Gigabyte K8N Pro. What motherboard do you recommend?
Let me know,
Jessica
