just got the 3 boxsets of the original star trek series, and want to back them up as .avi
is there an easy to use software that anyone can recomend, as the last thing i want is sync problems or the poor quality picture to get any worse?
many thanx

If you already have AnyDVD, try WinX DVD Ripper (http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/). It's a freeware (the Pro version costs money and can deal with DVD protections which AnyDVD would handle better).
Pinnacle Studio is my favorite for this kind of conversion but it's not free.

thanx.
tried this, and it took 48 minutes for just one episode-lol
anyway, when finished it wouldnt play due to codec error (I left it at divx).
any advice on the best settings to use for UK setup with good pic/not too big file size & playable codec on most pc's would be appreciated

Try the codecs from the free DivX player (http://www.divx.com/en/win).

I wouldn't recommend DivX. It's inferior to XviD in every way. Each episode in XviD would be about 350MB if done properly. Quality is not going to be exceptional if you consider a 48-minute encode time to be long.
I would recommend TMPGEnc Xpress if quality is really a factor.
