If I bought a standard USB mouse for my laptop will it work and will it be a hassle to install?

Thanks. I was thinking that because i thought it might cause some conflict with the built-in mouse pad

No it won't conflict. I use a USB mouse AND a USB Microsoft Natural Keyboard on my laptop so I can bypass both the built in mouse pad AND that cramped built in keyboard too (when you transcribe for a living it's a real godsend not to have to use that itty bitty keyboard).
