Hi, need a little help with a lappy I got to repair, the problem is it seems that security permissions have been removed, I cannot do anything with the lappy, can't copy and Paste, in msconfig there are a lot of services stopped and it won't let me restart them, netowrk connections shows as empty etc, there is a whole plethora of problems all related to security permissions. I decided to try installing xp on it to try and access some of the folders, but on install I get " windows could not install because no hard drive has been found" now I can boot the lappy up in xp pro but as stated above can do feck ll with it. Anyone offer advice or clues to my problems.

It sounds like the unit is infected.

The Safe Mode would be your only option for cleaning.

Scan with SuperAntiSpyware (http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/) then run the "Repairs" under "Preferences".
This should cripple the infection enough for you to finish up with Malwarebytes (http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/).

You might also waznt to try Kaspersky Rescue CD. It boots from the disc and scan before Windows loads.

Good luck.

Is it a sata HDD? if so that'll be why XP doesn't see the HDD, you'll have to slipstream the sata drivers into you're copy of xp, or if you're lucky the bios might have an IDE mode selectable in the bios.

yes geobon it is sata, can you expand on your answer please ?

As geobon said, you'll need to go to the BIOS to set the SATA controller to IDE (emulation) mode so the SATA HDD will act as an IDE drive. XP setup CD does not have the built-in driver for the SATA controller on your laptop so when installing XP, you'll need to press F6 then provide the driver on a floppy drive. Changing the SATA controller to IDE emulation mode will let the HDD run as an IDE HDD and therefore, no driver is needed for XP to see the HDD.

Well I slipstreamed the sata drivers in and all went well for the best part of then install, then BSOD, I didn't format the drive as I wanted to get some important pics off it, it looks like I'm gonna have to lose the info and try a format. Doe any of you experts reckon the BSOD is due to the old file structure being left intact or would that not matter ?

When did you get the BSOD during the installation? I don't think it was because you did not format the drive before running the setup. However, you should always backup the data on the drive before reinstalling Windows whether or not you format the drive.

Could you create a new partition on the drive, that way you could do a clean install of windows, get your important files, then format / resize the original partition.
GPick.

I can't back up the drive as it will not let me do anything on it, the BSOD came near the end of the install.

That might tells there were some bad sectors on the HDD or the setup CD was not made correctly when you slipstreamed the drivers. Could you please tell what tool you used to slipstream the SATA driver?

Nlite, van nugent.

Van Nugent

nLite is one of the best tools to do slipstreaming on XP. Did you use the latest version 1.4.9.1? Did you get any error message or numbers when it gave you the BSOD?

Edit: I suggest you take the HDD out of the laptop, put it in an external 2.5mm enclosure to check for errors on another system. This way, you won't lose the data on it and you'll be able to transfer the data to another drive.

I have ordered a sata caddy to do that very thing, yes nlite was the vers above. I ran a hdd check and it passed all checks, not sure about the software it was built into the bios on the lappy. Its a strange one though, I thought maybe it was a vers of mblast and ran mblast removal tool but again it found nothing.

Yep, we need to transfer the data from the HDD then reformat it to install XP. Errors which might exist on the drive will be corrected when we format the drive.

Just one other thing while I'm waiting on the hdd caddy, when I slipstreamed sata drivers I loaded a basic pack of drivers, not the specific driver for the hdd/lappy, could this have caused an issue, just curious on this one and want to eliminate any further problems, thanks for the response to date though, much appreciated.

I don't know what SATA controller the laptop has so I can't answer the question regarding the driver. Make sure in the BIOS the SATA mode is set to SATA/AHCI and not IDE. This setting if not set correctly will give you the BSOD as well.

Ok sorry about this but more help needed so here goes, I got the sata caddy, got in and got all the stuff off which I wanted, reformatted the drive and then proceeded to install xp with the sata drivers slipstreamed, again all went well, but then just as it was installing keyboard etc, the BSOD again, the error

: An attemtp was made to execute non-executable memory" error code: ***stop: 0x000000fc (0xf78ff180,0x068b4963, 0xf78ff0e0, 0x00000001)

I have had a search round the net and it seems the BSOD is related to SP3 and intel and new usb drivers, any ideas what to do next guys ?

Could someone please point me in the direction of the correct SATA driver to slipstream as I think I may be loading he wrong driver, the lappy is a compaq 6910p

The laptop has the Intel GM965 chipset so please go to this download page (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=%22GM965%22), select Windows XP Pro as the OS and you'll see all the XP drivers for the chipset on the laptop. The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator driver 14.37.4.5218 is for the video which you can install after installing XP. The 32-bit Intel RST Driver Files for F6 Install 9.6.0.1014 is the SATA driver needed for the XP installation.

BTW, if you're not running XP-SP3, get it here (http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html).

Hi again, well the good news is the lappy is working again with audio, its sp2 as when I installed sp3 it crashed, might be ok updating from sp2 but I dont fancy the heartache lol, one other thing when I re-enable the sata in bios I get BSOD it runs fine with it off though so again I can live with that. Thanks to all who offered help and advice, cheers everyone your a great bunch of people.:beer:

1. You can't install SP3 if you don't have SP1 or SP2 installed first;

2. The audio driver I had above is the correct driver for the soundcard on the laptop;

3. You can't switch the SATA controller from IDE emulation mode to SATA AHCI mode or vice versa after Windows has been installed without some hacking & tweaking that no one wants to do unless they have to. The mode must be set before you install Windows.

Maybe I didn't explain that right lol When I installed xp with sp3 it returned BSOD, this didn't happen with xp and sp2. All working fine now though so once again thanks.

Maybe the XP-SP3 CD was not properly made/burned.
