Van Nugent

Once HDMI is enabled as I mentioned in post #2, both audio and video will be carried to the TV via the HDMI connection. Therefore, the sound will come from the TV's speakers.

In the screenshot above, HDMI digital audio was not enabled but the S/PDIF was enabled instead. Try to set HDMI audio as the default audio device.
If you're using a DVI to HDMI adapter, remember these adapters will not allow HDMI audio to go thru. You must use a straight HDMI to straight HDMI connection.

That means either the motherboard doesn't support HDMI audio or you'll need to enable it in the BIOS. Please go to the BIOS to see if you can find the option to enable/disable the HDMI connection. If not, you'll need to use the S/PDIF to get 5.1 surround sound from an AV receiver or you'll need to connect the stereo output from the motherboard to the stereo input for the HDMI connection on the TV to get the sound.

If you can't find the option to enable/disable HDMI in the BIOS, the only thing you can do is to get the video from the HDMI connection and connect the stereo output from the motherboard to the stereo input for HDMI connection on the TV to get the sound. I don't think the onboard HDMI supports HDMI audio. You can install an add-on video card that supports this feature.

04-23-2010, 01:02 PM
The ATI HD 4000 series video cards would allow the HDMI connection to carry both audio and video (*). Right now you can still get the audio to your TV via the stereo analog output on the mobo but not from the HDMI output.
(*) You'll need to download & install the latest ATI Catalyst driver (http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx).

how does it connect ?Just connect the HDMI out on the video card to HDMI in on the TV then enable HDMI audio as I mentioned before.

04-23-2010, 01:12 PM
Sorry for being dumb so I could use the HDMI Lead > HDMI Lead cos now if I try that I get no signal at all so the Asus Radeon HD 4650 1GB would also help resolve with this matter ? allow both picture & sound thru hdmi cable and I would not need to use the DVI > HDMI Lead.
is it easily fitted ?
Van Nugent
04-23-2010, 01:16 PM
Yep, the ATI HD 4000 series cards like the Asus I suggested would let you get both audio and video to the TV via the HDMI input on the TV. Remember we do not want to use a DVI-to-HDMI or HDMI-to-DVI adapter because these adapters will not let the audio go thru. Just connect the HDMI out on the video card to HDMI in on the TV using an HDMI 1.3 cable. Enable HDMI audio in Windows then select HDMI source on the TV. You'll see the video and hear the audio on the TV.

Van Nugent

Your motherboard has 1 PCIe x16, 2 PCIe x1 and 1 PCI slots. The add-on video card is a PCIe x16 card so it'll go to the PCIe x16 slot on the mobo. You'll need to disable the onboard graphics when you install the add-on video card. Please refer to the manual page 4-23.

You need to download the driver and install it after you've installed the card, otherwise the driver setup can't find the card it supports and refuses to run. Press <Del> when you power up the system to enter the BIOS setup screen. Before installing the new card, please enter the BIOS, select Advance Settings/North Bridge Config then set the Initiate Graphic Adapter option to PCI/IGD which means the system would 1st use the add-on card if it's installed and if not, it would use the integrated video (onboard).
Edit: To correct the right key to press in order to enter the BIOS. It should be <Del> and I incorrectly typed <Enter>.

Probably the Intel driver could not identify the video card ID on the laptop because the laptop maker had customized it. In this case, you can use only the drivers provided by the laptop maker. Let's get an add-on video card if you want to have the sound through the HDMI connection.

Yeah, the same go to the onboard video on the mobo. Your mobo has the Intel G35/ICH9R chipset with the Intel GMA X3500 video card. If the above drivers refused to install, it means the onbard might be customized by the maker. You'll need to use the driver from Asus.

The new video card (I have no idea what video card you just bought but I guess it's a PCI6 x16 card) should go to the PCIe x16 slot which is b/w the 2 PCIe x1 slots. If there is a video card installed in this slot, you'll need to take the old card out.

There are 4 slots on the mobo, according to the manual, in this order: Closest to the back panel and CPU socket is the 1st PCIe x1 slot (the shortest one), next to it is the PCIe x16 slot (the longest one), next to this PCIe x16 slot is the 2nd PCIe x1 slot (the shortest one), and the last slot is the PCI slot. If you find an old card in the PCIe x16 slot with the VGA, DVI or HDMI connectors, take it out and replace with the new video card.

I could see the old video card has a fan on it in the pics. That's the 1 you need to take out. I don't know what cable you're talking about, can you give me a pic of it with the connector at the end?
There is a screw to hold the old card to the back of the case. You'll need to unscrew it to take the card out. When you put the new card in, you'll also need to use this screw to hold the new card to the back of the case.

That connector is the 6-pin power connector to supply the extra juice from the PSU to the video cards that require more than what the PCIe x16 slot can provide. Those cards should have the mating 6-pin connector on them. If the new card doesn't have this mating connector, you don't need it because the card would run OK with the current provided by the PCIe x16 slot.
