problem with dad laptop//im lost...

dad bought lapy in march..he got loads of viruses on it in december so decided to restore it...cudnt find restore disks and somehow managed to naff it up totally!!!..
ive tried to put windows xp and vista on it but cant get anywhere..i either get a blue error screen or it freezes... it was on vista previous..
its an emachines..comet will send it away and repair but that leaves him wivout any lappy,,..which he dont wanna do..

any ideas what i can try?

How far after you booted up the laptop did you get the BSOD? Did you get any error message?

after windows started istalling...that was installing xp...when i tried vista i get hrough almost all the set up but it just freezes before finishing... ill try it later and c what error message comes up..lappy back at his now

I would let Comet fix it and when it comes back working with fresh install of Vista, tell him to get rid of it, while it's still working and he can still get some money for it. Then buy a decent Laptop.

Not being funny or anything, but emachines are really cheap nasty pieces of carp and are designed to go wrong.

I suspect either overheating or memory fault. First, try to clean the vent holes and check to make sure the CPU fan is still working OK. You might need to take the fan off to redo the thermal paste/pad. If this doesn't fix the problem, you'll need to check the memory.

cheers m8...he went out and bought it without listening to us!! i managed to get another vista on it and so far its working..but i did notice the fan vents werent over clean!!! ill get him to clean the damn thing.... comet being funny bout sending it off he tells me....they prob wont take it with another version of vista on it i guess.....
il report back in a day or so if any change!!!
