Where Did I Go?

Hello all,

A few years back I was recommened a number of security software to install, to replace my suite of Norton software which caused no-end of problems.

Since then, every machine I have got, I have installed the same 5 pieces of software. However, I have just purchased a new machine, and now wanted to check what is best to install.

This is what I have been installing (all free):

AVG Anti-virus
Sygate Personal Firewall
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware
Spywareblaster.

Please cany anyone in the know advise if the above still offer adequate security, or whether other packages are now more effective/efficient.

Kind regards

I'm running SuperAntiSpyware Pro in addition to NIS 2010 and they've worked great for me so far. They both provide real time protection and besides, the new Norton 2010 is very light on system resources and it's very aggressive in protecting the system.

Moving to Open for more inputs.

I'm using Windows built-in firewall and NOD32 AV. Previously I was using Lavasoft Personal FW v1.0 which was fantastic but it had no x64 version so I abandoned it. (new versions are not the same firewall). Prior to NOD32 I was using Kaspersky which was a good AV but overly aggressive. I don't run any anti-spyware as the other programs prevent anything from installing + I've always found that manually removign spyware works best.

As all the programs you are using are free, if you are looking for free again. I would suggest :

AVG or Avast
SuperAntiSpyware
MalwareBytes

SpywareBlaster is still good IMO, but it can sometimes mess up website videos, such as IMDb

There are free editions for all, but some try to hide them and guide you to the paid version trials, so watch what you are downloading/installing

Google is your friend ;)
