Hello,
I have a Magic 3.1u modchip installed in my ps2. Ive had it over a year, it boots everything perfect until these last few days its been having trouble booting backups i have to try 3-5 times before booting, it boots originals fine and DVD Backups fine. Could it be my laser? Ive been backing up my game on DVD+R lately and theyve been working great, could that be the problem?
thanks in advance.

some model of PS2 doesn't like +R but for yours it seems like it's fine.. also cleaning the len helps alot.. i have a friend who have an magic3.1 chip also.. and it seems like his laser is dying and i open it up and clean it now it play flawlessly... before i did that.. the laser was only picking up pinco disk and would not even pick up oringal DVD...

Mine takes a few tries sometimes the first time too, but I dont mind. Can be the media, you shouldn't change media ifyou got it to work right.

Well that could easily be your problem then. To my knowledge Sony and Memorex both outsource thier dyes. So they go with whichever dye manufacterer is giving them the best deal at the time. Princo and Ritek manufacter thier own dyes, so you never have to worry about that from batch to batch. My recommendation would be to pick up some Ritek DVD+R or Taiyo Yuden DVD+R. Ritek DVD+R carries the Ricoh dye which is very highly recommended for +R. Taiyo Yuden speaks for itself. Talk to anyone who uses Taiyo Yuden media and they will all agree that it is top notch. Memorex DVD+R used to carry the Ricoh dye on a regular basis but recently I have been getting reports that they have started changing out the dyes on their +R discs. The findings are consistant with your results. When they were consistantly using the Ricoh dye they were outstanding media, when they started changing dyes then a number of problems were reported. Seems typical of Memorex though.

Also, I use compressed air, its the best thing to try first. Get only air for electronics so it won't drip. Open tray, turn off ps2 in back, direct air in slot & use short blasts, 2 sec's. try not to put the air nozzle in the ps2.

Agreed. The compressed air really is the best method for cleaning out any electronics.
