Ok been a long time since i messed about with wireless networking

but i sorted a wireless network for my friend many years ago but left his wireless network unsecure, thought it best for him as it would be easier for trouble shooting ,as he know nothing about computers.
Any how he asked me to secure it
so i went around put a pass phrase on the router , went to his lap top and my mind went blank , i cant remeber his passphrase.
so the router is secure and i cannt connect his laptop to it .
Thought all i had to do is put a pin in the reset hole of his belkin router and its back to square one
but thats not the case ..

how do i take the secruity of the router so i can start again ,i cannt remeber how to do it

im getting old i think

can anyone help me

Most (if not all) routers show the characters of the passkey because there is no good reason to hide them (as people can always change the passkey once they can get into the Admin web interface and for this reason, the admin passwords are always hidden). I have not seen a router that hide the passkey with the *'s. So get into the Admin web interface and check the Wireless Security section. You'll find the passkey there.

You can't get on the Net but you can get into the HTML Admin control screen (which people usually call the web interface of the router). Please connect the router to your PC or laptop via an RJ-45 cable then type the default IP of the router into the browser. If you've already reset the router, you'll be able to log into the Admin control screen with this default IP. When you reset the router, make sure you press the reset button for about 15 seconds. Most routers require you to press the reset button for 10 secs or so to reset.

is there not an ip address at the bottom of your router like 192.168.0.1 if there is put that in to the address bar and it will take you to the admin page

If you can't open the web interface, that means the default IP of your computer is something different from the subnet of the router's default IP. You'll need to change the PC's IP in order to connect to the router's web interface. Let's try connecting the PC to 1 of the LAN ports on the router via an RJ-45 cable (CAT5/6) then reboot the PC. After that, try to type in the default IP of the router into IE or FF to see if it'll let you open the router's web interface. If not, we'll need to change the default IP of the PC.

And remember the default Admin ID - password are usually admin - blank (nothing) or admin - admin, respectively, unless the manufacturer has used something else like my ZyXEL router uses 1234 for the default password. You'll need to refer to the manual to see what they are.
