Have you ever wanted to try Linux but were just too timid to try? I am one of those people, well I was until I tried the latest version of Knoppix Linux which you don't install but run from CD. Now I'd tried previous versions but have to say this just knocked my socks off! :t_up:

I tell no word of a lie, I rebooted my dualboot W2K/XP Pro 3 HD RAID system to CD and let Knoppix kick in and within 1 minute 30 seconds I was surfing the net after it configured my system inc my ethernet modem, ISP/pass etc - Everything done in a flash!

Anybody who has not tried it give it a whirl now and you won't regret it, you will need ADSL as it's a hefty 700mb d/l. Go here to the Knoppix site for more info and the d/l URL nearest you:- www.knoppix.org/ (http://www.knoppix.org/) And yes it is FREE too!

What you d/l is a .iso image so simply burn the image file using DVD Decrypter, Alcohol, Nero or whatever and reboot making sure that your CD/DVD reader is selected as first boot choice in your BIOS. Knoppix also has many uses other than an O/S for instance recovery jobs if you cannot get into Windows etc, so give it a try now.

Yeah, I was playing with Knoppix a couple of weeks ago, its very impressive - particularly if you have more than 512 Mb of RAM as you can load the entire OS to RAM and it runs very smoothly. Of course I wouldn't leave windows for everyday use but for server and recovery linux is a good option :)

whoa, this Knoppix is cool!! and the installation is very colorful too :D It automatically setup everything for you.. way much more faster than windows when it comes to installing things.. anyways, i'm currently using it to post this message :) which more amaze me is it plays all my divx/avi/xvid file right away becuase it's already got the codec preinstalled on the CD!

[EDIT]

Since this OS can be run on a single CD-R, can i use it without a hard-drive installed on my PC?

Knoppix does not install anything, and yes you can use it without a HD in your PC.

I've also fancied trying it.

Any pointers to setting DNS servers I don't pick them up with DHCP.

I agree! Great find, Lazza! It is amazing how easy it is!

This is one of the most impressive things I have seen in a while, and great learning :bigthump:
I can see it as a great tool if ever windows is dead in the water. Full access to help from the net, etc. till one can get Windows going again. And if one has been lazy and not backed stuff up, there is a burner utility that will allow backup to CDR before a format!

There is another (older) one called Demo Linux. A google search will turn it up.

A few months ago, i recieved a free knoppix CD along with an issue of my subscription PC-magazine. Like Lazza phrazed quite lovely, i was to "timid" (and maybe a little to worried) to actually try it.

I think this weekend, i'm going to give it a try anyway. I'm having more and more problems with Windows, and getting eager to try something new

Just playing around now with a Windows XP Pro SP2 LIVE CD I've made and that's pretty cool too. Easy to install burning software, diagnostic etc on it too. Just use the plugins from below link.

Make your own using Barts PE Builder, it's pretty straightforward. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
