the canon powershot a** range is excellent, very affordable and has many of the features of a the more expensive cameras (manual controls such as exposure settings, to get better night shots etc) movie mode is above average and can be used as a point and shoot if thats all your after.
runs on AA's (4x) which to me is a plus (may be heavier than a proprietary battery- but you'll never be stuck if you run out of juice- can buy AA's in most supermarkets/hardware stores around the world, although i'd invest in a set 4x 2000+ mah nimh batteries and decent charger- and an additional set as back up).
also use compact flash cards which interms of mem cards is the cheapest by far (discounting smart cards) and are the easiest to get in large sizes (handy if you shoot in movie mode or on the highest res)
one downside is that its not truly pocket size, for that i'd recommend the ixus series (digital elph in the us) they are truly pocket size and as with all canons has a great lens and superb photo quality, but expect to pay a little extra and lose some of the manual controls- has the same movie mode as the a series
was gonna point you to amazon but seems that finally amazon have sold out of the a60's that were being sold for £100- which in my opinion was possibly the bargain of the year.

I concur. I have the cheap-end of the Powershot range (the A300) and it produces outstanding results. Definitely go for the A70 as it is a 3+MP camera and the A60 is only a 2+MP camera. So yes, there is an A70 model. I suggest checking out www.epinions.com (http://www.epinions.com/) as you will find detailed ratings on each of those by people who own them. Anyways we need more info as to what you are looking for (features). At this point I would say that you would want nothing less than a 3 Megapixel (MP) camera if you want really good quality. Anyways if all you want is a camera that is easy to use and takes great quality pictures then the A300 model which I have is more than sufficient for your needs. Also I agree that Ni-mh rechargables are a must. They last longer than the alkalines (regular and rechargable) and of course you can re-use them. You will burn a hole in your wallet if you just try to use regular alkaline batteries.

the a70's been phased out to be replaced by the a75, not sure that there's much difference though so get the a70 cos its likely to be cheaper, the a80 makes a slightly more signifcant jump as there's slightly more manual features a 4mp CCD (as opposed to 3.2 for a75/a70) and the lcd screen is higned so you can take self portraits and see what its gonna look like (as the screen will fold out 180 and can rotate about its hinge), plus say at a concert you can hold the camera above your head and angle the lcd so you can actually see what you're shooting.
More of a gimmick maybe but one good thing about it is you can flip it round so that the screen itself is protected when not being used
thios is what i mean

oh yeah a60 and above can with the correct adapter take external lenses too so that may be of some use for if you do really get into the whole photography thing
it was £225 at amazon las time i checked

Better to visit the store & put one in your hands & see how it feels. Some feel better if you have small hands, some better with big hands.
