Welcome to CompuHelp :)

I believe the maximum Ram for this model is 2gb (2x 1gb) ...... see here (http://www.crucial.com/uk/upgrade/compatible-memory-for/Sony/VAIO+VGN-SZ1+Series/list.html?click=true)

As for the HDD, I couldn't find whether there is a limitation in bios, maybe Van will stop by and add to this .... if not, considering the age of the Laptop, you might like to consider an external HDD.

I found some info about SZ1 series.. HDD probably is no problem and RAM is about technology intel 32 bit system (WINXP) maximum 3.5 GB ram 2 x 2 GB (in bios is only 3.5) when i have vista 64 bit system 4GB in bios and in system. I check mor info about them and maybe I will buy RAM and HDD end try ))))))))))

It is correct that 32 bit Operating Systems have Ram limitations, but in addition to this, the Crucial website suggests that 2gb Ram is the maximum allowed for this Laptop ....... Crucial information is normally quite accurate.

Yep, sometimes you can run the modules that are larger in size than the specs said. Like the specs of my 8 yr old laptop said it could only run 2x256MB of PC133 SODIMM but I could put 2x512MB on it and the BIOS recognized 512MB ea with no problems. You can never know until you try (but with low density RAM). However, in your case, the laptop will run the 800MHz RAM @ 533MHz (*).
