I've just got broadband (pipex) and my pc has been on and connected to internet 24/7 since.
Is this likely to cause an early death for my pc ?
Is pipex likely to close my account for over use ?
thanks

Definatly not ok. You need to go outside, also maybe get some sleep.
Seriously though, I leave on PC on 24/7 as a server. Also often leave it downloading stuff.
Another point is that many people have routers which are on 24/7 which would look the same to an ISP as a PC which is connected.
I am sure that if they feel you are being too much of a leech they will send you a warning notice telling you to download less or worse do what my ISP did and move all the unlimited users to a much smaller download pool so that the speeds drop to sub modem.

On the early death issue - I wouldn't worry about it. Obviously, anything running constant will wear faster (Hard drives for instance) but I doubt you will need to worry. I know people that have had machines running almost 24x7 for years and still going as strong as the day they were built.
As for closing you account, dunno. Depends on what exactly your going to be doing over the connection 24x7 and if your breaking their T&Cs in doing so. You might wanna look over the small print again that you were supposed to read so you can be sure if your limited in any way on what you can do with your connection.
As for just having it connected all day, no there is no problem with that.
EDIT - Just read celtic's post, he has a point ;).

Thanks for the replies,i dare say that its like a new toy to me and i'll eventually use it less and get some sleep, maybe even get chance to see my kids.lol
Anyway i must admit i didn't read the small print before joing pipex as so many people on the forum recommended them,i have however found my answer in the pipex f.a.q's so it looks like another long night.
thanks again
Answer:
click here ("][/url]Is there a limit on the amount of data I can download or upload? http://www.solo.pipex.net/prtl-images/spacer.gifNo. Unlike some other ISPs, PIPEX do not impose limits on the amount of data you can upload or download. You will only be restricted by the Upload and Download speed of the ADSL connection you have chosen. If you are on a capped service (Solo 500 Lite or Solo 1000 Lite) you will have a monthly allowance of data that you can download and upload, anything over this allowance will have to be paid for. i also use pipex and my computer has been on for several months and its constantly downloading all day and all night.
you dont have to worry about your account being closed, as pipex will allow 24/7 use. :D

As far as I was aware it's actually more wearing on your PC turning it off and on each day due to 'atomic migration' (or something) which is where the power surges which result from turning your PC on and off cause the molecules of solder so slowly move, ultimately resulting in connections breaking and things going wrong....
Or did I read that on April 1st somewhen? Please tell me if I'm wrong!:insane:

cfodder, your correct, turning your pc on and off will cause more harm than leaving it on 24/7
except for the dust,lol

Yeah I'd like to know more about this too, I NEVER turn my PC off. It's either on just on, downloading or encoding stuff. No matter, it's on 24/7. I've always wondered if I was harming my HD's cuz theyre on all the time

even for the HD's its better for them to either be on all the time or off all the time (which would be pretty useless) as the constant stopping and starting can damage the heads i think
as for everything else theres no problem at all, apart from mountains of dust so every few weeks or every month it may be worth opening the case and dusting it down to minimise the risk of any problems
