just a question is there anything i need to know before i get on with it?

same as vista though if you use win 7 to format it will make a partition to put boot files on.

Yep, but think about whether you want to delete any Recovery Partition (if there is one), just in case you want to revert ;)

Phil has a good point. Whenever I got a new laptop, before booting into Windows for the 1st time, I always ran Acronis True Image in DOS to back up the whole HDD with all the partitions on it.

Van, another good one for imaging is Image for Windows, this actually make a bootable DVD so no need to load Acronis CD then search for the image. Been using it for years to make bootable recovery discs for clients and works a treat, sure enough I would never give up Acronis, but for new imaging thats easy to restore, IFW is a fantastic tool.

Only drawback is that it doesnt resize, so if your original partition is 100GB, the image taken will not restore to anything smaller, unlike Acronis.
ps. Shame that Symantec turned Ghost into a huge pile of bloated crap, when Binary Research had it before sold, its small, its fast, and it works bloody well.

Yeah, I used to like Ghost but not anymore. I like True Image for the fact that we don't need to install it on the system after the bootable CD is created so it's 1 less app to install and it'll work fine for backing up the new systems. Thanks for the info on the TeraByte backup tools. It'll be perfect for my wife's PC. :)
All you really need is to back up vista activation files before formatting. You do not need the rest. Just incase you need to install vista again.

You'll need to install True Image on Windows first then run it and select Tools => Bootable Rescue Media. It'll give you the options to either create a CD image on the HDD or burn directly to a CD. Just follow the onscreen instructions. You only need to install True Image on the 1st system to create the bootable CD. After that, just save the CD in a safe place and whenever you need to make a new backup or need to restore the backup, just boot the system up with this CD to run it.
