Check your network connection on the PC that has problem to see if it can connect to both Local and Internet. Are you running Vista, x64 or x32?

FlashGet (http://www.flashget.com/en/download.htm) as well as other download managers (including p2p tools) tend to change Windows connection settings in order to speed up file transfers. Please remove FlashGet then reboot the system to see if the problem can be fixed. If not, try to reset Windows Winsock:

- Rightclick the Command Prompt icon (Starts => All Programs => Accessories) then select Open as admin to open the elevated Command Prompt interface;

- Type netsh winsock reset then press <Enter>;

- Reboot the system.

This hopefully will fix the problem. Also, please check FlashGet website to see if there is a new version of FlashGet.

Edit: Run SuperAntiSpyware as suggested, update the virus definitions then rescan your system (choose a full scan).

it appears the ie error is summat to do with appdata folder. there is a reg fix but this didnt work for me. flashget also said the error was summat to do with appdata folder and not being able to access it. will try above and see what happens

right have done the above. have uninstalled/reinstalled flashget (now working) and windows live. windows live refuses to login.
goto sign in and it just says we cant sign you in as the service is temporarily unavailable, error code is 80070005. have tried everything even found the following
Completely uninstall Messenger. Make sure there are no remnant files or folders.

Then go to Start, Run and type in %temp% and then OK. (Not sure if that shortcut works on 2000, but it should. If not, manually go to your temp folder)

Delete everything in the folder, then reinstall Messenger.

its not even attempting to login onto the server its just popping up the error immediatley.

still have the ie error also saying some proggy is trying to change my default serch engine
