Hi guys, yesterday was my neices birthday and she was given a webcam for her laptop (newly installed XP from manufacturers discs)
When the drivers are installed and the camera plugged in it finds the right name for the camera but says there's a problem. in the device manager there's 2 entries for it, one is something like USB camera, the other is the camera's model name. Both have yellow exclaimation marks, in properties it says the device could not be started.
I've uninstalled, reinstalled, tried different USB ports, tried different drivers (updated from creative website too) but none of it helps
I really want to get this going for her, do you guys have any ideas that I can try tonight please?
this is the camera:

The only other thing I can think of is incompatibility.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that a number of Creative webcams didn't like ATI Chipsets. If this is the case, she will have no options other than exchange it for another (compatible) model.

If this doesn't work, like Phil said, the driver is not the right one either for XP or for the cam.

Did you try this driver (http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SCANNER-Digital-CAMERA-WEBCAM/OTHER-SCANNERS/Creative-Live-Cam-Video-IM-Pro-VF0410-Driver-10101.shtml)?
Edit: Remove (uninstall) the items with yellow !s (with delete old driver option enabled) before installing the new one.

If still no joy and you are able to confirm the webcam is working ok, on another PC .... I guess she could try a PCMCIA USB2 Card like this (http://www.usbnow.co.uk/p533/PCMCIA_Card_-_USB_2.0/product_info.html) one. If it is a chipset conflict, this should be a workaround.

the camera was fine in another laptop, my parents took it back and swapped it for a Microsoft one without waiting to see if we could resolve it!

XP has a bad habit that when it couldn't install the driver and there appeared some yellow ! marks in Device Manager, quite often we would need to remove the troubled items as I mentioned in post #8 before we could reinstall the driver successfully.
